Eight coaches of 15904 Chandigarh – Dibrugarh Express derailed near Pikora village between Motiganj and Jhilahi railway stations in Gonda District of Uttar Pradesh around 2:30 pm on Thursday.
According to the statement from Northeast Frontier Railway, two deaths had been reported while eight were injured. However, the Gonda District Magistrate informed media persons that around 20 were injured. The DM also said that the severely injured had been shifted to hospitals, while passengers with minor injuries were given first aid at the site.
Meanwhile, Assam Chief Miniter Himanta Biswa Sarma has said that there were no casualties from the state. in a post on X, the CM said that he was closely monitoring the situation and teams were on standby for support.
The Railways Ministry has announced ex gratia of Rs. 10 lakhs to the family of the deceased, Rs 2.5 lakhs for grievous injury and Rs. 50,000 to the minor injured. Besides the enquiry of the Commissioner of Railway Safety, the Ministry has also ordered a high-level enquiry.
The NFR has informed that the train bound for Dibrugarh in Assam left Chandigarh on Wednesday night. The train was scheduled to reach its destination on Saturday evening.

“The stranded passengers of the derailed train are being brought by bus to Mankapur station near Gonda. A special train has been arranged for them from Mankapur to Dibrugarh with stoppages enroute”, NFR stated.
Due to the derailment of Chandigarh – Dibrugarh Express, two trains were cancelled and 19 trains were diverted.
