Chang students at St.Joseph’s college (A)Jakhama celebrates Naknyulum

The Chang students of St.Joseph’s college (A)Jakhama celebrated Naknyulum festival on August 1 at Camp Easy.

 

During the celebration, Naong Senti spoke about the significance of Naknyulum festival which is one of the most important festivals celebrated by the Chang Naga tribe. It falls In the month of July (Naklit) baring of the lunar calendar of the year. This period also coincide with the first harvest season of the year and is also considered as a religious ceremony to celebrate the triumph of good over evil as well as a harvest festival

Naong mentioned about the ancient beliefs about the entire world enveloped in darkness where day and night could not be differentiated. The darkness was so thick that people could not even go out for collection of firewood and water, narrated Senti. People remained inside their homes for six days but on the seventh day, light came back as usual and the Chang community commemorate Naknyulum as a tribute to give thanks to the Creator.

Due to the advent and the spread of Christianity, all the rituals and ceremonies are not in practice but the festival being part of our culture is celebrated in all chang inhabitants areas with great solemnity also mark as the victory of all, stated Senti.

After the celebration of the festival, other activities like cleaning of the paths leading to the field and neighbouring villages are conducted.

Earlier, the programme was chaired by Elvina, and an invocation pronounced by Lamniu. The welcome note was delivered by Changlemla, and special presentations by Shanen, Ayenla, Popping Chuba and Khumpong Yimkhiung.
