Civil Defence Wardens and Volunteers complete week-long training at Wokha

The week-long Civil Defence Wardens and Volunteers Training, organised by the Department of Home Guards, Civil Defence & State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) Wokha, concluded on Monday at Tiyi Hall, Wokha. The training, held from November 18 to 24 brought together 360 Civil Defence volunteers from across the district, comprising both men and women aged between 18 and 45 years.

The programme was conducted under the supervision of Company Commander cum Dy Controller and Deputy Commissioner cum Controller Civil Defence Echung Konyak S and Platoon Commander, Mhonyamo, with support from SDRF personnel in Wokha. Certificates and training materials were distributed to all participants during the closing ceremony.

Over the seven days, volunteers underwent intensive sessions focused on disaster preparedness and response. The curriculum covered the history, objectives and organisational structure of Civil Defence, disaster mitigation, and modern defence challenges.

Participants received instruction in basic rescue principles, knotting techniques, fire behaviour, combustion, and methods of extinguishing fires. Practical demonstrations included handling fire extinguishers, operating rescue equipment, and safely entering damaged structures.

Training also included lessons on building collapses, site surveys and stages of rescue operations. First aid formed a major component, with volunteers learning CPR, artificial respiration, and the management of shock, wounds, fractures, burns, strokes and heart attacks. Exercises on applying bandages and slings, and using stretchers to transport injured persons, were also conducted.

Company Commander, Echung Konyak S in his address commended the volunteers for their discipline and commitment throughout the programme. He also emphasized on the importance of utilising the skills gained for the benefit of the community and strengthening local preparedness during emergencies. He further reminded the participants that the training was not merely for certification but to equip them to serve society when required.

Platoon Commander, Mhonyamo Lotha expressed gratitude to the Deputy Commissioner, the trainees, the instructors and the entire SDRF team for the successful completion of the programme. Appreciation was also extended to the various colony councils for their support.
