Noklak: One student hopes for teachers to come soon as they are lagging behind to complete their syllabus

On 29th April 2024, the Department of School Education announced the introduction of Science Stream at Government Higher Secondary School, Noklak, the lone higher secondary school in the district. This was a dream come true for the students and the community as a whole.

However, the school is missing the integral part to function – teachers.

Ten students have taken admission in Class XI (Science) as the first batch and the classes began on 15 May 2024, but the ground reality hits a greater dismay as the students wait for their teachers.

In a Notification issued on 24th May 2024, the Department five Post Graduate Teachers has been assigned to the newly introduced Science Stream at GHSS Noklak. On 3 June 2024, Kongkhao Lushing, the Principal, wrote to the Department and highlighted that none of the PGTs had reported. Couple of days later one teacher reported to duty.

Every year, hundreds of students from Noklak district pass out the HSLC Examination, after which they are compelled to go out of the district for higher studies mainly to Tuensang, Mokokchung, Kohima and Dimapur. As a result, many parents are shouldered with financial burdens.

Despite the Science Stream been activated, the school lacks the basic facilities to be able to help its students receive quality education, especially in the new Stream. Students saw the introduction of the Stream as a window of opportunity; however, the absence of teachers is the denial of the students’ right to education.

Learning that Science is to be introduced in the only higher secondary school in Noklak, students decided to study in their own district but so far they have only found disappointment and dejection.

One student said that he decided to stay in the district and study hard to fulfil his ambitions. He said that he wants the teachers to come to class.

Another student said that there are lots of things to be learned, so they need a teacher.

One student hoped that the teachers will come soon as they are lagging behind to complete their syllabus, while another expressed that it has been a month and yet they have not started their lessons.

Meanwhile, some graduate teachers are going out of their way to teach the Class XI (Science) students in the absence of the assigned teachers.
