Clean Doyang Mission begins clearing wastes; DC Wokha seeks collective effort to preserve river

Wokha: Clean-up operation to take upto 3 days, DC says it is short-term solution while long-term strategies are being developed

The Clean Doyang Mission, initiated by the District Disaster Management Authority, Wokha, began clearing the wastes accumulated at Doyang Dam on Saturday. The joint committee of the Mission comprises of the Administration, Police, DDMA, Forest Department, Fishery Department, Water Resource, and NEEPCO Limited.

During the Committee meeting on Saturday at the clean-up spot, Deputy Commissioner and District Disaster Management Authority, Wokha, Ajit Kumar Ranjan, IAS, Ranjan stressed the importance of the Action Plan Mission to clean Doyang River as a significant social initiative. Recognising the challenges of the mission, he reassured that the departments are committed to succeed. DC Ranjan informed that the operation would span two to three days and described it as a short-term solution while long-term strategies are being developed.

He encouraged the local community to promote awareness about waste management and also to collaborate with the authorities in formulating an action plan. Further, the DC sought the active participation of the community in the cleanliness drive, offering assistance in any capacity feasible.

The DC and Chairman of DDMA underscored the importance of preserving the Doyang River, terming it as one of Nagaland’s most valuable assets, and urged the community to take responsibility for its maintenance.

Addressing concerns regarding North Eastern Electric Power Corporation (NEEPCO) Limited’s jurisdiction over the area and its responsibility for cleaning, he clarified that while the company generates power, the local community too benefit greatly from the river. Hence, he called for collective ownership and efforts towards improving the situation.

The Chairmen and representatives from various villages in the area also participated in the meeting, expressing gratitude towards the departments and the various stakeholders for their contributions towards cleaning the river.

On 7th June 2024, during the emergency meeting on the matter, Chief Secretary, Nagaland urged DC Wokha to initiate a mission mode of cleaning the debris at Doyang dam within a week. The CS had also instructed that the exercise must involve various departments, fishermen, local villagers, NGOs etc.

The execution of the Clean Doyang Mission began on Saturday based on the action plan prepared by the Area Team that physically visiting and assessed the spots of solid waste pollution and the amount of waste on 7th June 2024. During the assessment survey, the team had identified the place where the cleaned-up waste could be collected and the disposal mechanism.

The Area Team, constituted by DC and Chairman DDMA, Wokha consists of Pukha, EAC Sungro; Jonji, District Disaster Management Officer; SDRF District Commandant; District Tourism Officer; Executive Engineer, Water Resources Department; District Fishery Officer; Divisional Forest Officer representative; and, Representative from North Eastern Electric Power Cooperation Limited (NEEPCO).
