Cloudburst over Lhonak Lake in Mangan, Sikkim triggered a flashflood in Teesta river in the Lachen valley on Wednesday morning. 23 army personnel were reported missing and several vehicles were reportedly submerged under slush at Bardang near Singtam.
According to Akashvani News, Vice Chairman of Sikkim State Disaster Management Authority, VK Sharma has said that the flooding was reportedly caused by a cloudburst and probable outburst of glacial lakes in Mangan district, which is being ascertained. Sharma informed that while the disaster has affected telephone and road connectivity on National Highway 10, which connects Sikkim to West Bengal, at several places, loss of life is yet to be confirmed. He informed that the release of 4000-6000 cusecs of water from Teesta III dam at Chungthang has caused flooding and washing away of bridges, disrupting connectivity.
Sikkim Chief Minister PS Tamang visited Singtam to assess the damages. He took to X to appeal to the citizens “to remain vigilant and refrain from unnecessary travel during this critical time.” It is essential that we maintain composure and hope for a swift return to normalcy in our region, he added.
Tamang also stated that the emergency services had been mobilized to the affected areas.
In view of the flooding of Teesta river, the Government of Sikkim has ordered all government and private schools in Pakyong, Gangtok, Namchi and Mangan districts to remain closed till 8th October 2023.
