Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Friday said there has to be a workable formula to solve the issue for the public and to prevent infiltration.
The Chief Minister was responding to a query on the stand of the state government with regard to the union government’s decision to fence the Indo-Myanmar border.
Rio emphasized on the need to have a thorough discussion and consultation with the people as Nagaland shares 215 kms with Myanmar and many Nagas reside across the border.
“Both side is Naga, my village is one side and my field is on one side, so there has to be a workable formula,” said Rio.
Mention maybe made that Deputy Chief Minister Yanthungo Patton on 22 January 2024 informed that Nagaland government will hold talks with the leaders of other Northeast states and approach the central leaders with their views on opinions on this matter.

India shares 1,643 km of border with Myanmar. Nagaland 215kms, Mizoram shares 510kms, while Manipur has 398kms and Arunachal Pradesh 520kms.
The FMR was introduced in the 1970s as the ethnic tribes living in Myanmar and India share ethnic and familial ties and they wanted a system for easy movement. Presently they just require a travel pass issued by the border guarding force to cross the border. But the centre recently said once the FMR is cancelled, the villagers would require visas.
