The Indian Meteorological Department has said that cold wave to severe cold wave conditions will likely continue for another three days over the plains of Northwest India. Below normal temperature by 1.0 degrees Celcius to 2.0 degrees Celcius have been reported in many parts of North and adjoining Central India except over Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan where these are normal to above normal, it said.
IMD informed that in the last 24 hours, the lowest minimum temperature of 3.0°C have been reported at Narnaul (Haryana), Ayanagar (Delhi) and Kanpur (East Uttar Pradesh). The minimum temperatures are in the range of 3-7 degrees Celcius over most parts of Punjab, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, north Madhya Pradesh and in some parts Rajasthan and in isolated pockets of Bihar.
Light rainfall/snowfall at isolated places very likely over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad and Himachal Pradesh on 13th January 2024 due to Western Disturbance. Similar conditions are expected in these areas on 16th and 17th and in Uttarakhand on 17th and 18th January, IMD stated.
The Department also said that dense to very dense fog conditions are very likely to prevail for a few hours in night/morning in some/many parts of Punjab and Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi during 13th-16th and dense fog in isolated pockets on 17th January 2024. IMD highlighted that these conditions may impact transport and aviation, the power sector and human health and therefore advised stakeholders and citizens to exercise precautions.
Meanwhile, IMD said that conditions are becoming favourable for cessation of Northeast Monsoon rains over Tamilnadu, Puducherry and Karaikal, Kerala and Mahe and adjoining areas of Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Rayalaseema and South Interior Karnataka around 15th January, 2024.
