Community-led poverty reduction programme in 1260 villages in the State: Governor La Ganesan

In his address during the fourth session of the Fourteenth Nagaland Legislative Assembly at Nagaland Legislative Assembly Secretariat, Kohima, Governor La Ganesan highlighted the various achievements and progress in Nagaland.

Governor updated on the initiatives taken for promoting entrepreneurship and developing the State viably for setting up industries. The four MoUs between the Government of Nagaland and SIDBI, aimed at catalyzing economic growth and fostering entrepreneurship was cited. The MoUs include establishment of Swavalamban Connect Kendras (SCKs), startup seed funding, facilitation of MSME development and creation of a dedicated SIDBI Cluster Development Fund (SCDF).

The Government has also developed initiatives to promote agricultural growth, which in the last two decades have witnessed a two-fold increase in the production of food grains. “We are positioning ourselves as a producer of organic agricultural products, and 40,558 hectare of land has been declared organic, while about 20 different crops have been organic- certified. Under PM-KISAN, more than two lakh of our farmers have been benefited, with 7488 crores having been directly credited into their individual bank accounts,” stated the Governor.

Under NEC, the Department of Horticulture has received approval for three projects, namely ‘Setting up of Cold Storages’ ‘Integrated Processing Unit and Pack House for Pineapple’, which are aimed at strengthening the post harvest management, informed the La Ganesan.

Another project is ‘Setting up of Demonstration Unit for Exotic Crops such as Hazelnut, Kiwi, Peach, Nectarine, Apricot and Plum’, which aims to promote exotic fruit crops in Nagaland through adoption of scientific technology.

“To strengthen the Veterinary Health Services in the State, the Department has established two more Veterinary Hospitals at Tseminyu & Mangkolemba under NABARD which are nearing completion. The Fishery Department is making efforts to enhance aquaculture productivity from existing 2.5 tonnes to 3.0 tonnes per hectare. The Sericulture sector in the State also secured employment for 17,350 persons through the rearing of silkworms,” stated Ganesan.

In the rural sector, the Department of Rural Development has generated 177.4 lakh mandays and provided employment to 4.07 lakh households, involving 4.67 lakh individuals during the current financial year under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS). “The Department is also implementing a community-led poverty reduction programme in 1260 villages under 74 RD Blocks covering all the districts through Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM) under Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM). The programme has benefitted more than 1.24 lakh rural households through 14,487 Self Help Groups (SHGs). These SHGs have formed themselves into 1143 Village Level Organisations (VLOs) and 85 Cluster Level Federations (CLFS),” stated the Governor.

Ganesan also assured that all necessary steps had been taken up for early completion of the ongoing construction work for the Medical College at Mon.

Continuing its efforts to improve the urban infrastructure, the Governor informed that out of the total 30,766 Dwelling Units (DUs) approved by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Housing for All (Urban) Mission in Nagaland, 18,261 DUs have been completed, and the remaining are at various stages of construction. “Under the Smart City Mission (SCM), Kohima has seen several iconic projects being taken up, which has elevated the whole urban landscape of Kohima to a new level. Kohima Smart City is the only City among the North Eastern Smart Cities to be in the Top 10 of all Ministry Interventions and Challenges,” mentioned the Governor.

In his speech, Ganesan also acknowledged the entire district administration, the police, the security agencies and all the tribal bodies and organizations, for the peaceful law and order situation for the past many years. “We continue to take steps for further improving the overall infrastructure of policing, upgrading the skill and capabilities of the police force in maintaining law and order and in controlling crime. The Yimpang Platoon post, 7th NAP Battalion at Bhandari, Wokha was recently inaugurated, while construction of multi storied barracks for accommodation of 300 constable trainees each at PTS and NAPTC, Chumoukedima is being taken up,” stated Ganesan.

The Governor also cited the Nagaland Police Outreach & Civic Action-cum-Beat Patrolling Initiative through Mobile Police Subsidiary Canteens which was also launched on 22 January 2024, aimed towards building a positive Police – Public partnership, based on mutual trust and co-operation. The state police along with all other departments concerned have also launched the ‘War on Drugs’ to make the State free of the scourge of drugs and narcotics, informed the Governor.
