“If we don’t bow before the British, then how will we bow before the BJP?” Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said on Sunday at a public rally at Nagaon, Assam. He claimed that the BJP is afraid of the success of Rahul Gandhi led Bharat Jodo Yatra and therefore attempting to disrupt the yatra and attacking party members.
On Sunday, the yatra re-entered Assam from Arunachal Pradesh where the public gave warm response to Rahul Gandhi. As the Assam leg recommenced, so did the drama. The day witnessed a number of incidences including BJP supporters created ruckus around the bus where Gandhi was travelling. During this time, Assam Congress Bhupen Kumar Borah was assaulted and left with a bloody nose.
Some men holding BJP flags also approached the vehicle where Congress General Secretary (Communication) Jairam Ramesh was in. The Congress alleged that some members of the social media team and cameramen were also caught in the scuffle.
Following these incidences, the Congress maintained that the success of ‘Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra’ has made the BJP “scared and nervous” and that is why they “have resorted to such cowardly acts”. “It is clear that this incident has been done directly on the instructions of the Chief Minister of Assam,” it added as it continued its attack on Himanta Biswa Sarma.
A lot of uncertainly surrounds the route of the yatra and the itinerary of Rahul Gandhi in the coming couple of days in Assam.
Kharge on Sunday raised the question again why the yatra is having to face so many hurdles in Assam unlike any other State on India.
