Congress to field S Supongmeren Jamir for Nagaland’s Lok Sabha seat

Kohima: Congress announces candidates for 39 Lok Sabha seats

The Indian National Congress has declared S Supongmeren Jamir as its candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections 2024. Jamir is a seasoned politician and the President of Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee.

In 2003, he had contested in the Nagaland Assembly polls in 2003 with a Congress ticket from Mongoya Constituency in Mokokchung district which he won but his later attempts in 2008, 2018 and 2023 were not successful.

Supongmeren Jamir’s candidature was announced today by KC Venugopal, AICC General Secretary (Organisation) in New Delhi. Congress candidates for 38 other Lok Sabha seats were also announced for the Lok Sabha Elections, 2024.

Among the prominent names were Rahul Gandhi (Wayanad, Kerala), Dr Shashi Tharoor (Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala), KC Venugopal (Alappuzha, Kerala) and Bhupesh Bhaghel (Rajnandgaon, Chhattisgarh).

Addressing a press conference, Venugopal also announced that of the 39 candidates, 15 candidates are from the General category and 24 candidates are from SC, ST, OBC and minority groups. Further, he informed that 12 candidates are below 50 years of age, 8 candidates are in the age group 50–60, 12 are in the age group 61-70 and 7 candidates are in the age group 71-76.

The ruling NDPP-BJP government in Nagaland has already declared former MLA Dr Chumben Murry as its consensus candidate for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls.
