The Five Tribes Committee on Review of Reservation Policy (CoRRP) has issued a set of general instructions for an indefinite non-participation in all state government functions, including the upcoming Independence Day celebrations on August 15, until its demands on reservation policy are addressed. This comes in the backdrop of a unanimous resolution adopted during a joint meeting of the committee on August 9 comprising the apex bodies of the Angami, Ao, Lotha, Rengma, and Sumi tribes.

The committee announced that non-participation in all state government functions will remain indefinite until the state government gives satisfactory response on the issues including- revisit the composition of Reservation Review Commission and revoke the inclusion of members from CSOs; no delay or extension for Reservation Review Commission tenure beyond six months; and suspension of Backward Tribe Reservation Policy if the state government is determined to interlink the outcome of Reservation Review Commission with the completion of census.

The committee said non-participation in all state government functions will be in the form of abstaining from all meetings and functions called/organized by the state government on any issue or occasion. In this regard, it has requested all the five tribes’ apex bodies to direct their frontal organizations and subunits across eight districts- Kohima, Mokokchung, Wokha, Tseminyu, Zunheboto, Dimapur, Chumoukedima and Niuland, to comply with the directives as per the joint resolution of August 9.

For upcoming Independence Day on 15 August, the committee issued the following measures to be adopted: public to voluntarily abstain from attending the function, no cultural troupes will participate in any form, student bodies to ensure that no schools and colleges force their students to participate in celebrations outside their institutional premises.

It further underscored that due care must be exercised to ensure peaceful non-participation and avoid confrontations at all levels.
