Following unexpected heavy rainfall on the night of February 21, 2025, a culvert collapsed on a primary route in Wokha Town, causing the road to cave in. The road near PWD-Zuvotong Colony or District Hospital, which serves as a major route connecting the District Hospital via Wokha main town, is now closed for vehicular traffic, adding to the woes of the denizens, especially those living to the south of Wokha, who are already facing inconveniences due to closure of other major roads in the town.
With the High School-Molonsu Road currently under repair, commuters are left with very limited options for travel. The only remaining routes available are the Bokajan road, which is known for being hardly motorable, and the Hospital-Longsa route via the National Highway.
The closure of the main road has left residents and travelers from areas including High School, Molonsu, Vungoju, and nearby villages such as Meriyan, Totsuyan, Yanthung, Pongidong, Tsungza, Khumtsu, Hankvu, and Longchum with few choices. Many now face the daunting task of crossing the poorly maintained Bokajan road through Etsuchukha and Zero Point or the longer route to Longsa, which significantly impacts travel time.
The blockage on the road leading to District Civil Hospital is especially concerning as urgent healthcare services are now harder to access. This could have potentially dire consequences for anyone in need of immediate medical attention.
Given the urgency of the matter, residents and concerned citizens are calling on the District Administration to take immediate action to address the situation.
In response to the situation, the PWD (R&B) Wokha Division has confirmed that the road was severely impacted by the unexpected downpour on the night of 21 February. The division further clarified that, since 2019, the Urban Development Department has taken over responsibility for the road within the town.
