The impact of Cyclone Remal was witnessed in the districts of Kiphire and Tuensang resulting in destruction of properties, infrastructures, houses and trees on May 28.
Pongren village which is located under Longmatra block, Kiphire district experienced a gusty winds and heavy rains. Around 11:30 – 12 Pm a granary was destroyed when a huge oak tree fell over the property due to heavy winds, destroying harvested crops of millets and maize. The granary belonged to a farming family of 8 members whose livelihood depends on farming crops for daily survival.
Most of the crops were washed away by the heavy rain and wind and cannot be used or collected, said the VDB secretary of Pongren village.
The village community are reportedly providing assistance to the affected household, an appeal has also been made to the government for assistance as the food stock reserved by the affected family for the current year has been destroyed.

It is to be noted that the Pongren village community reserve oak trees in and around its village jurisdiction so as to prevent the property from heavy winds since it is located on a hill side where strong wind are more prone to occur.
“Everyone in the village share the pain of the affected family and our community will help rebuild the granary for the unfortunate family in sometime sooner” added the VDB secretary of Pongren village who appealed for the government’s immediate intervention in the matter.

Two houses at Kipongya Ward under Kiphire Town, near 3rd NAP E Coy fellowship, has also been adversely affected this morning.

Noksen under Tuensang District
The torrential heavy downpour accompanied by strong wind resulted in a severe damages in Noksen town and Noksen village.

It has been reported from sources that heavy rains caused significant destruction over Noksen Town where 17 houses has been damaged including a Primary Health centre, St.Joseph’s Catholic church and Government offices.


In Noksen village, one Morung and four houses were completely destroyed while 11 other houses were also affected with minor damages.
Earlier, the Deputy commissioner of Tuensang and the District Disaster Management Authority Tuensang has issues directives to release emergency Relief fund to the affected households.
