Cyclone Remal: Red Alert for extremely heavy rainfall for Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura on 27th May

New Delhi: Severe Cyclonic Storm expected to cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts on 26th May around midnight

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Red Alert for the states of Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura on 27th May 2024 for isolated heavy to very heavy with extremely heavy falls (>204.4 mm) in view of the approaching Cyclone Remal. The Red Alert means Warning (Take Action).

The Orange Alert (Be Prepared) for heavy to very heavy rainfall (115.5-204.4 mm) has been issued for Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura on 26th and 28th May 2024.

The Red Alert has also been issued for the Gangetic West Bengal on 26th May and Assam and Meghalaya for 27th and 28th May 2024.

On Saturday, the Department has said that the Depression over central Bay of Bengal intensified into a Deep Depression and laid centred about 440 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh), 440 km south-southeast of Sagar Islands (West Bengal) and 480 km south-southeast of Canning (West Bengal) at 8:30 am today.

This deep depression is very likely to continue to move nearly northwards and intensify into a Cyclonic Storm over Eastcentral & adjoining north Bay of Bengal around 25th May evening, IMD said. Continuing to move further northwards, it would intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm by 26th May morning and cross Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara by 26th May midnight as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with wind speed of 110-120 gusting to 135 kmph.

As a result, warnings for heavy rainfall and squally wind have been issued for coastal districts of West Bengal and eastern districts of Gangetic West Bengal, North Coastal, the Northeastern States and the Andaman Islands.

The Department has said that Light to moderate rainfall at most places with heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places is likely over Mizoram, Tripura and South Manipur on 26th and over Assam, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Manipur & Tripura on 27th and 28th May. Isolated extremely heavy rainfall is also likely over Assam, Meghalaya on 27th and 28th May, Arunachal Pradesh on 28th May and Mizoram and Tripura on 27th May.

Squally wind speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph is likely over Mizoram Tripura and south Manipur on 26th and 27th May and 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is likely over South Assam and Meghalaya on 27th May, IMD further said.

In view of the impending cyclone in the Bay of Bengal, the National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) met on 24th May under the chairmanship of Cabinet Secretary Rajiv Gauba to review preparedness. It was informed at the meeting that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has deployed 12 teams and 5 additional teams are kept on standby. Rescue and relief teams of the Army, Navy and Coast Guard along with ships and aircrafts have been kept in readiness.

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) informed that it is making coordination efforts with the concerned state administrations and stakeholders to facilitate a synchronised response to potential contingencies arising from the cyclonic storm. All pertinent information regarding the evolving situation has been disseminated to stakeholders to facilitate preparedness and coordinated action.

The ICG’s Remote Operating Stations at Haldia and Paradip are broadcasting regular and multilingual Very High Frequency alerts, advising transit merchant mariners to take necessary precautions. Additionally, ICG ships and aircraft are conducting surveillance along the projected path of the cyclonic storm to provide timely assistance and support.

Nine disaster relief teams have been positioned at strategic locations including Haldia, Paradip, Gopalpur, and Frazerganj, ready to provide immediate assistance in the event of an emergency, ICG said.
