Deputy Commissioner and District Election Officer, Mokokchung, Ajit Kumar Verma, IAS, has issued an order directing all Village Councils under Mokokchung district to strictly comply with the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in view of the ensuing by-election to the 28-Koridang Assembly Constituency.

The order, dated April 1, 2026, stated that the MCC has been enforced across the entire district from the date of announcement of the by-election and will remain in force until the completion of the election process.

The order noted that certain Village Councils and local authorities have been found engaging in political campaigning, partisan activities, imposing restrictions on free movement, and issuing prohibitory orders. The order stated that such actions are in clear violation of the MCC.

Citing Section 15 of the Nagaland Village and Tribal Councils Act, 1978, the Deputy Commissioner stated that village councils function as auxiliary bodies to the district administration and are responsible for maintaining law and order within their jurisdiction. They are also required to strictly follow instructions issued by competent authorities.

The order further warned that any Village Council member found acting in contravention of the directive will be liable for strict action under the provisions of the Nagaland Village and Tribal Councils Act, 1978, and other relevant laws.
