DC Mokokchung issues directives on strict implementation on ban of trade and hunting wildlife

The Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, Thsüvisie Phoji has issued directives appealing for strict implementation on the ban of trading and hunting wild animals and birds.

With the Government of Nagaland having adopted the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 w.e f December 18, 1981, the DC reminded that the hunting of wild animals/birds within the territorial jurisdiction of Nagaland, is strictly prohibited.

The only exception under the Act are vermin (eg. Certain species of rats) or permission to hunt is accorded under the provisions and reasons specified in the Act. Other than these special cases, there are no exceptions either in terms of time or species.

“Amul Falcons are protected under the Wildlife Protection Act 1972. As such-hunting, trapping, killing or selling of Amur Falcons for food or possession or otherwise is a criminal offence, punishable with upto 3 years of rigorous imprisonment or with fine or both under Section 9 & 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972,” stated the order.

Therefore, the DC reminded that appropriate necessary action will be initiated against any individual/groups found hunting, trapping, killing or selling of Amur Falcons for food or possession.

In compliance with the directives and in the interest of protecting and conserving the Wildlife population of the District, the order directed all the Villages and towns under Mokokchung District to strictly implement the ban on trade and hunting of wild animals and birds in areas under their jurisdiction.

“Any person/ group of persons acting in violation of the above directives shall be liable to be prosecuted under the relevant sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972,” stated the order.
