Following a recent directive from the Directorate of School Education for registration of ‘Out of School Children’ (OoSC), the Deputy Commissioner of Noklak, Arikumba informed the stakeholders to register the details of children in the age group of 6-16 years who are not enrolled in any school or dropped out at any stage before completing secondary education.
Speaking to Nagaland Tribune, the DC said that the responsibility of the District Administration is to make the OoSC aware that they should enrol in the portal to enable the department to devise a mechanism for arranging special training and mainstreaming them in appropriate classes at neighbouring Government Schools/National Open School.
“Our responsibility is to create awareness for the drop outs and let the individuals enrol in that portal”, the DC said. Non-Governmental Organisations can be of great help for the upliftment of the school drop outs, he added.

Based on the registrations, he further said, the department of School Education can work out what will best for the children, to either enrol them in government schools, open schools or provide them training programmes such as carpentry, art & craft, farming related activities and many opportunities.
‘…. but response is required,’ he added.
Unemployment being the biggest issue, Arikumba also said that children may get involved to anti-social activities, so in order to prevent this, the programme is being implemented. The DC also lauded the government stating that it is a good initiative for the betterment of the young drop outs.
Meanwhile, the Khiamniungan Students’ Union (KSU) has confirmed that a drive to collect the records of the Out of School Children in the community is on the cards and that it plans to carry it out soon.
