In view of increasing traffic congestion, space constraints and growing public safety concerns, Deputy Commissioner of Wokha, Vineet Kumar, has issued a fresh order enforcing strict parking regulations within Wokha town, warning that non-compliance could seriously endanger lives and disrupt emergency services.

The order, issued in continuation of an earlier directive dated July 3, 2025, noted that the rapid rise in the number of vehicles in recent years has placed immense pressure on the town’s limited infrastructure. It observed that several commercial establishments have been constructed without adequate parking facilities for customers and staff, while available public spaces are being increasingly encroached upon by indiscriminate parking.

According to the Deputy Commissioner, such practices have resulted in frequent traffic congestion, restricted pedestrian movement and obstruction of emergency access routes. The situation, he cautioned, poses serious risks to public safety and disaster preparedness, as narrow and congested roads blocked by parked vehicles hinder the timely movement of fire services, ambulances and other emergency response teams.

“In the event of accidents, natural calamities or other emergencies, such obstructions can critically endanger lives and property,” the order stated, stressing the need for a regulated parking system that balances private convenience with larger public interest.

According to the directive issued by the Deputy Commissioner, private and commercial vehicle owners currently using public spaces for parking have been directed to arrange their own parking facilities within 45 days, by January 31, 2026. People planning to purchase new vehicles have also been advised to factor in parking arrangements beforehand.

The Deputy Commissioner stated that all shopping complexes, commercial establishments and new constructions must mandatorily provide adequate parking facilities within their premises. The Town Council has been directed to review and streamline approval processes for new commercial structures in accordance with the Municipal Act to ensure strict compliance.

After the expiry of the 45-day grace period, parking along the National Highway passing through Wokha town would be completely prohibited. A task force comprising officials from the district administration, police, traffic police, Town Council and Transport Office would be constituted to strictly enforce the ban.

The Town Council, in coordination with the Traffic Police, has also been instructed to review parking arrangements on all other town roads and take necessary measures for regulation, enforcement and identification of suitable parking spaces to ensure uninterrupted movement of emergency vehicles at all times.

Stating that the order has been issued in the interest of public safety, disaster readiness and orderly urban development, the Deputy Commissioner directed all concerned to comply with the instructions in letter and spirit.
