DCPU Dimapur organizes consultative meeting on ‘Protecting the Rights of the Children’

Dimapur: Childline 1098 is more than a number—it is a beacon of hope for children in distress

A consultative meeting of all stakeholders under Dimapur district was held at DC’s Conference Hall, Dimapur on 19th November 2024, focusing on the theme “Protecting the Rights of the Children.” The event organized by the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) Dimapur, brought together the stakeholders to discuss and strategize efforts aiming to safeguard children’s rights in the district.

The meeting began with an address by the Chairperson, K. Esther Sumi, PO (IC), DCPU Dimapur, followed by a welcome address by Avika Zhimomi, DCPO. Stakeholders presented their perspectives on fostering dialogue and collaboration adding two pivotal PowerPoint presentations highlighting the ongoing child-focused initiatives.

Maojungla, LCPO, DCPU Dimapur, presenting on Mission Vatsalya, highlighted on the implementation of child welfare and protection through various agencies, including the District Child Protection Units (DCPU) as part of efforts to safeguard children in difficult circumstances.

She said that the mission is an umbrella scheme aimed at creating a safe and supportive environment for children. It includes components such as improving the functioning of statutory bodies like the Child Welfare Committee (CWC), enhancing institutional and non-institutional care, and providing emergency outreach and sponsorship programs. The program also emphasizes foster care and adoption, supporting children in vulnerable situations to ensure their holistic development

Alomi Sumi, Coordinator of the District Child Protection Unit (DCPU) spoke on Child Helpline Services in Dimapur where he highlighted the critical role of child helpline services in addressing issues affecting vulnerable children. Under the nationwide initiative Childline 1098, the service operates 24/7 to assist children in need of care, protection, and emergency support. The helpline, managed by the DCPU in collaboration with local authorities and NGOs, provides interventions for cases involving abuse, neglect, trafficking, child labour, and other forms of exploitation. Trained professionals ensure prompt responses, linking children to legal, medical, and psychosocial services as required.

Sumi also emphasized the importance of community awareness to strengthen the effectiveness of the helpline. “Childline 1098 is more than a number—it is a beacon of hope for children in distress,” she stated. She encouraged community members, schools, and other stakeholders to utilize the helpline to safeguard children’s rights and well-being.

Regular sensitization programs and campaigns conducted by the DCPU aims to inform the public about the services, ensuring timely intervention and support for children in challenging circumstances. Sumi also added that for immediate assistance, children and concerned citizens can call 1098, the dedicated toll-free helpline for child protection services in Dimapur and across India.
