A debut poetry collection by young writer, Sobulemla Pongen titled “Anachronic Love Songs to Alexander Alekhine” was launched at a function held at Hotel Japfü, Kohima, on Saturday.
Pastor of Kohima Ao Baptist Church, Dr SN Among Jamir, who released the book, remarked that the occasion symbolized more than a literary milestone, describing it as a reflection of inner strength and perseverance. He stated that the author’s work embodied a journey shaped by challenges, where moments of uncertainty were transformed into creative expression.
Jamir observed that having interacted with the author personally he had witnessed her determination during difficult phases of life. He maintained that instead of retreating in times of hardship, she chose to articulate her thoughts through poetry, lending depth and authenticity to her work.
Highlighting the essence of the collection, he noted that the poems explore enduring themes of love, time, and human emotion, suggesting that creativity often emerges from struggle and introspection. He added that the book stands as an example of how personal trials can be reshaped into meaningful expression.
He further encouraged young people to recognize and nurture their talents with faith and discipline, stating that challenges in life can often become the foundation for significant achievements. Expressing optimism, he said the author’s work would resonate with readers and carry a message of hope.
Sharing her thoughts, Sobulemla Pongen informed that the collection consists of 60 poems inspired by the life of fourth World Chess Champion, Alexander Alekhine, whose resilience and accomplishments influenced the theme of the book.
She stated that the project originated from a single poem written in 2021 and gradually expanded into a full-length collection. Drawing from Alekhine’s life marked by war, exile, and adversity, she said his perseverance motivated her to pursue her own creative journey.

Pongen also spoke of the challenges she faced as a self-published author, noting that she undertook the entire process independently, from writing and editing to formatting and publishing, while learning technical aspects along the way. Despite initial doubts about the unconventional concept, she continued the project, inspired by Alekhine’s belief in leaving behind a legacy.
The author informed that the book is structured into three sections—“Songs of Life”, “Songs of Chess”, and “Songs of Love”—combining lyrical poetry with experimental forms. She added that the work has been made available internationally through online platforms such as Amazon and Google Play Books, and has received encouraging responses from readers, including chess enthusiasts overseas.
She also expressed gratitude to well-wishers, family, and friends for their support, and acknowledged the inspiration behind her work.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Limakumla Pongener, invocation was pronounced by N. Abong Pongen, and the vote of thanks was delivered by Imkongchiba.
