Deputy Commissioner chairs review meeting on narcotic coordination in Mokokchung

Mokokchung: 12 individuals arrested in one month in connection to five NDPS cases

In a concerted effort to combat drug abuse and promote awareness, Thsuvisie Phoji, NCS, Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, chaired a crucial review meeting of the District Level Committee for Narcotic Coordination Centre (NCORD) on 31August 2023.

The meeting, held at the Conference Room in the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, witnessed the participation of various stakeholders, including law enforcement officials, representatives from excise and drug control departments, and civil society members. The agenda primarily focused on assessing the progress made since the last meeting held on 21 July 2023.

During the meeting, Tumchobemo Yanthan, NPS, Additional Superintendent of Police, Mokokchung, presented a comprehensive report. He highlighted that from 21 July 2023, to 31 August 2023, a total of five NDPS cases were registered in the district. Furthermore, 12 individuals were arrested in connection with these cases. The seized contraband included 36.53 grams of brown sugar, 554 spasmoproxyvon capsules, and 7 Alprozolam tablets. Notably, these efforts aimed not only to enforce the law but also to raise awareness about the dire consequences of drug and substance abuse.

Deputy Commissioner, Thsuvisie Phoji urged all committee members to work together to make Mokokchung a drug-free region. He emphasized that the approach should be reformative rather than punitive, encouraging cooperation between the excise and police departments. The need for comprehensive mass awareness and sensitization programs throughout the district was underscored. It was suggested that these initiatives involve various stakeholders, including Village Councils, Church Organizations, Civil Society, and NGOs, to ensure widespread and effective outreach to the community.

In addition, the Drug Inspector informed the committee that only 40% of pharmacies operating within the Mokokchung Municipal Area had installed CCTV cameras as per the directives. The Chairman of the Committee instructed the Drug Inspector to closely monitor the CCTV footage, regularly inspect stock registers of Schedule-H and X drugs, and ensure 100% installation of CCTV cameras within the stipulated time frame set by the Government.

The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks from the Chair, highlighting the commitment of all stakeholders to combat drug abuse and create a drug-free environment in Mokokchung.
