Nagaland’s Director General of Police, Rupin Sharma, IPS and Deputy Commandant General of Home Guards, Civil Defence and SDRF Nagaland, Medozhalie Pienyü has been awarded the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM) on the occasion of Republic Day 2024.
Further, Nagaland Police personnel Peter Shüya Angami, SDPO, Toshimongba Imchen, Armed Branch Inspector (ABSI) and Archer Phyobemo, ABSI have also been awarded Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) for valuable service characterized by resource and devotion to duty.
Speaking to Nagaland Tribune, Pienyü expressed gratitude for the honor. “The Government has recognised our service during the COVID-19 pandemic and our response executed during disaster situations,” said Pienyü who has served for more than 30 years now. The Home Guards, Civil Defence and SDRF took responsibility of manning border areas, transportation and burial of dead bodies and sanitisation efforts during the pandemic in Nagaland.
“We have also been instrumental in initiating the Disaster Response System,” mentioned Pienyü.
Pienyü is also a recipient of the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM) in 2011. Mention may be made that an awardee can receive the PSM only if s/he is a recipient of the MSM.
Pienyü also informed that, following formalities, the awardees will receive their respective medals in the next Independence Day celebration or subsequent Republic Day.
The President’s Medal for Distinguished Service is awarded for special distinguished record in Service. The Ministry of Home Affairs announced on the eve of the 75th Republic Day that out of 102 PSM, 94 have been awarded to Police Service, four to Fire Service and four to Civil Defence & Home Guard Service.
In total 1132 personnel of Police, Fire Service, Home Guard & Civil Defence and Correctional Service have been awarded Gallantry/Service Medals.
Two BSF personnel have been posthumously awarded President’s Medal for Gallantry (PMG) for outstanding contribution in the prestigious task of peace keeping as part of the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) as members of the 15th Congo Contingent of BSF at the Moroccan Rapid Deployment Battalion (MORRDB) Camp at Butembo.
275 Gallantry Award have been conferred to 72 personnel from J&K Police, 18 personnel from Maharashtra, 26 personnel from Chhattisgarh, 23 personnel from Jharkhand, 15 personnel from Odisha, 08 personnel from Delhi, 65 personnel from CRPF, 21 personnel from SSB and the remaining personnel from the other States/UTs and CAPFs.
