Commissioner of Police (CP) Dimapur has issued a public advisory reminding all individuals and organizations, including media houses, content creators, civil society groups, and institutions of their legal obligation to protect the privacy of children in conflict with the law (CCL). This comes close on the heels of a recent incident in Dimapur which was followed by the public disclosure of a minor’s identity.

The CP Dimapur’s advisory cites Section 74 of the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, which strictly prohibits the publication or disclosure of any detail that could reveal a child’s identity, including name, photograph, school, family, or address. Violations of this provision are punishable by up to six months of imprisonment, a fine of up to Rs. 2 lakh, or both.

Authorities stressed that beyond legal ramifications, such disclosures can cause severe psychological and social harm to the child and their family. The public is therefore urged to exercise caution and responsibility when handling information related to juveniles involved in legal matters.

CP Dimapur reiterated the collective responsibility to uphold the rights and dignity of every child and called for strict adherence to legal norms in safeguarding juvenile identity.
