Dimapur is set to turn its streets into a platform for climate action as the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), in collaboration with the District Administration, Dimapur Development Authority, Department of Environment and Climate Change, Nagaland Pollution Control Board, and the National Youth Climate Consortium, announced the Run 4 Green Dimapur Marathon, scheduled for September 27 at Urban Haat, Old Dhansari Bridge.

The event, organised under the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP), seeks to raise public awareness about air pollution, promote sustainable urban development, and encourage community-driven environmental action in Dimapur, which has been identified as a “non-attainment city” for air quality.

Announcing the event, Thungchanbemo Tungoe, Chief Executive Officer (CMO) of DMC, said the marathon is part of a larger strategy to tackle rising air pollution and improve the city’s air quality index.

Alongside the run, tree plantation and urban forestry drives will be initiated to reduce particulate matter concentration and create long-term green cover, he added

He also said the initiative also aligns with key national and global movements, including MY Bharat, which empowers youth in nation-building and environmental protection; the National Youth Climate Consortium, which focuses on urban heating and environmental challenges; and the Earth Alliance, which advocates sustainable development and climate resilience.

To ensure mass participation and grassroots engagement, partner NGOs including Team Better Dimapur, Can Youth, and Pro-Rural are extending their support to mobilize young people and local communities. Their involvement aims to create lasting change by linking physical activity with climate action and sustainable practices.

The Run 4 Green Marathon has been designed with four key objectives: to rai awareness about air pollution and its health impacts; to promote greening and sustainability initiatives; to encourage collective action for a cleaner, healthier Dimapur; and to engage youths and communities in environmental action.

The marathon will feature two categories: Open (Male/Female) and Junior (Male/Female). Registration is ₹300 for the Open Category, while Junior Category participants can register free of cost.

The CEO urged all citizens to participate in the Run4Green Dimapur marathon and contribute towards healthier, greener future. For details and registrations citizens can contact designated helpline.
