The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has announced that it will be collecting data on the non-local populace in Dimapur district. At the same time, the Union has clarified that the exercise is being done in the interest of the Nagas and that it is “not against any community/communities settling in Dimapur”.
“We assure no persecution on any non locals”, the DNSU stated and expressed that it wishes to live in “peace and harmony”.
In a press release, the Union reminded that Dimapur is the only district excluded from the purview of the Inner Line Permit (ILP) regime which was formulated so that” indigenous people are not exploited by non-locals.”
The DNSU blamed the State Government for not extending the ILP regime in Dimapur which has led to “unprecedented illegal migration” and pointed out that “Dimapur district is currently controlled by outsiders with 90% of the business under non indigenous communities.”
Further, the DNSU stated that despite assurances from Home Minister to check the influx of illegal immigrants into the district, no effective mechanism has been implemented.
