DNSU urges extension of summer vacation in light of extreme weather conditions

The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union (DNSU) has expressed deep concern over the inadequate duration of the upcoming summer break for government schools. As per the Department of School Education’s academic calendar for 2025, the summer vacation is scheduled from July 14 to 28—a period the Union considers insufficient given the prevailing weather conditions.

Highlighting that the peak of summer heat in Dimapur typically occurs during July and August, the DNSU has made an urgent appeal to the concerned department to extend the summer break to a minimum of 20 days, or ideally, a full month extending into the fourth week of August 2025, in the interest of students’ and teachers’ health and well-being.

The Union pointed out that the ongoing extreme weather conditions—marked by intense heat, waterlogging, and occasional flooding—have caused considerable hardship in urban areas. These challenges are further compounded by frequent power outages and load shedding, which severely impact schools, most of which lack backup power systems. This, according to the DNSU, disrupts classroom activities and adds to the discomfort, making it difficult to conduct regular classes during the summer peak.

Alternative suggestion for winter break

In addition, the DNSU proposed a revised academic approach that takes into account seasonal variations. Noting that Dimapur experiences relatively milder winters, the Union suggested that longer classes be held during the winter months, allowing the summer break to be extended without affecting academic progress. This, they believe, would help maintain the academic schedule while prioritizing the health and comfort of students and teachers during the harsh summer season.

The DNSU hoped that the Department of School Education will give serious consideration to this pressing appeal and implement appropriate measures to ensure a more conducive and safe learning environment for all students.
