Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has on Monday said that the ‘double engine government’ of the BJP has “dealt several blows to the people of Manipur.” In a post on X, he criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not visit the State that has been burning under ethnic violence since 3rd May 2023.
“He last visited Manipur in Feb 2022, only to campaign for elections, and now has left the people of Manipur to fend for themselves,” Kharge said. He pointed out since violence broke out, 200 people have died, 60,000 people have been displaced and to this day, 50,000 people continue to live in relief camps “in despicable conditions without adequate medical facilities and food” with nowhere to go. He also mentioned that around 80 people have reportedly died in camps in Churachandpur district itself.
“Their future is bleak,” the Congress chief stated.
Kharge further alleged that the camps are functioning with the help of good Samaritans and NGOs alone while slamming the “complete apathy and neglect” of the BJP. Moreover, Kharge cited that since 1 January, 10 people have died and seven have been injured.
He also mentioned how the Arambai Tenggol made the Meitei MLAs and MPs take oath at the Kangla Fort in Imphal where Manipur Congress President Keisham Meghachandra Singh was “brutally assaulted and tortured.”
There is no normalcy and peace in sight, Kharge said, alleging that PM Modi had made “hollow” promises to the people of Manipur in August 2023 in the Parliament.
