Dr. Chumben Murry, PDA Lok Sabha Candidate

Dr. Chumben Murry, the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) candidate for the lone Lok Sabha seat in Nagaland, was born to Lt. K. Renthungo Murry on 18 September 1962. Dr. Murry is married to Dr. Meribeni Odyuo,  with whom they share two sons.

He completed his Matriculation from Government High School, Tuensang in 1978. He pursued his Pre-University (Science) from Shillong College, Shillong in 1981, and went on to earn his MBBS degree from Government Medical College, Nagpur in 1987, followed by an MD (Obstetrics & Gynaecology) from the same institution in 1990.

Dr. Murry has been actively involved in various social activities where he served as the Honorary Secretary of the Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS), Wokha Branch, and as the President of the Indian Medical Association (IMA), Wokha Branch. He is the Founding President of the Lotha Doctor’s Forum (LDF) and a Founding Member (Secretary) of the Lotha Ex. Parliamentarians Forum.

His career in government services began as a Medical Officer for the Government of Nagaland from 1987 to 1990. He then served as a Junior Specialist from 1990 to 2006, and as a Senior Specialist from 2006 to 2007.

In 2007, he took voluntary retirement and contested in the 11th Nagaland Legislative Assembly in 2008 from the 38-Wokha Assembly Constituency on a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) ticket. He was elected and appointed as Cabinet Minister for Agriculture (Government Of Nagaland). Dr. Murry served as the State President of the NCP from 2009 to 2012, before merging with the Naga People’s Front (NPF) in 2012. He contested the 12th Nagaland Legislative Assembly from the same constituency on an NPF ticket in February 2013 but was unsuccessful.

However, he re-contested and was elected to the 13th Nagaland Legislative Assembly on an NPF Party ticket in the election held on 27th February 2018. He served as an MLA until he joined the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in 2022 and was appointed as Advisor, Department of Law & Justice, Government Of Nagaland.

In the 2023 general elections, he chose not to contest, paving the way for another candidate in an effort to promote political unity in his native village (Wokha Village). Following the 2023 general elections, he was appointed as an Advisor to the Chief Minister of Nagaland till his resignation in March 2024.
