On the historic occasion of India’s 79th Independence Day, National Vice President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Chairman of MARCOFED, Government of Nagaland, Dr M Chuba Ao paid a special visit to the residence of Havilder Mering Ao (Retd.), a distinguished veteran of the 3rd Assam Rifles, in Sungratsu village, Mokokchung district.
Havilder Mering Ao, now 105 years old, and his wife Sentiyangla Ao, aged 100, were honored in a heartfelt ceremony. Dr Chuba Ao presented the Indian National Flag to the centenarian war hero as a tribute to his lifelong service and dedication to the nation.
“It is a great pleasure to meet such an extraordinary individual who has lived over a century and served the country with unparalleled courage,” Dr Chuba Ao said during the visit.

Havilder Mering Ao’s military career is etched in history—he was awarded the Shaurya Chakra on April 27, 1960, by the then President of India, Dr Rajendra Prasad, for his acts of gallantry. He retired from service in November 1960 after an illustrious career in the armed forces.
The veteran remains a living testament to India’s rich legacy of bravery and patriotism. His spirit, even at 105, continues to inspire the people of Nagaland and the nation at large.
