Dr Senka Yaden ‘Man of Science’ passes away; Ao Senden declares 17 March as day of mourning

Dr. Senkalong Yaden or Dr. T. Senka Yaden, a distinguished scientist, educator, and researcher, passed away on March 14, 2025, at 6:35 PM (local time) at his residence in Tyler, Texas, USA. Born on April 21, 1935, in Merangkong Village, Nagaland, he dedicated his life to scientific research and education, making significant contributions in the fields of biology, medical research, and pharmacology.

In a condolence message, the Ao Senden described the “Man of Science” as a humble yet dynamic man of vision and a dedicated leader, who surpassed and excelled in life through his own diligence. Ao Senden’s President Marsanen Imsong and General Secretary Imtipokyim stated that late Yaden lived and led by example in his extra-ordinary life as a true blooded Ao Naga and that his academic achievements were true testaments of his wisdom and intelligence.

As a mark of respect and honour to Dr Senka Yaden, the apex organisation of the Ao community has declared 17th March 2025 as day of mourning.

DR. T. SENKA YADEN: A LEGACY OF SCIENCE AND EDUCATION

A Life Dedicated to Science and Education

Dr. Yaden’s academic journey began at Government High School, Mokokchung (1948-1952). He then pursued a B.Sc. in Biology at Wilson College, Bombay (1952-1956) and an M.Sc. in Zoology from the University of Bombay (1956-1958). His passion for research led him to become a CSIR Research Fellow at V.P. Chest Institute, University of Delhi (1958-1959).

Seeking greater opportunities, he moved to the United States, where he pursued a Ph.D. in Zoology at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis (1961-1965). His doctoral research focused on “Uptake of Organic Compounds by Euglena gracilis.” He continued to expand his expertise, engaging in advanced research in areas such as marine biology, neuroscience, hypertension, and sickle cell anemia.

Dr. Yaden was a professor and researcher at multiple institutions across the United States, including:

Jarvis Christian College, Hawkins, Texas (1967-1980)

Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine, Fort Worth (1980-1986)

Parker Chiropractic College, Irving, Texas (1984-1986)

Talladega College, Alabama (1987-1988)

Wiley College, Texas (1988-1993)

Texas State Technical College, Marshall, Texas (1992-1994)

Texas College, Tyler, Texas (1993-2007)

He held key administrative roles, including Chairman of Science & Mathematics at Jarvis Christian College and Director of the Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP) at Wiley College.

Final Tribute and Funeral Arrangements

Dr. Yaden was married to Theola Thedford. According to his wife, Theola Thedford, Dr. Yaden had expressed his wish to donate his body to science. In fulfillment of his desire, his body was donated to Southwestern Medical Center, Texas, for medical research on March 15, 2025. This decision aligns with his lifelong commitment to advancing scientific knowledge, as he had previously worked at the institution and had made arrangements for his body to contribute to medical studies.

His wife further informed that a memorial service will be held to honor his life and legacy. However, the date and time of the service are yet to be finalized.
