Chief Election Commissioner, Rajiv Kumar today appealed the electorates of violence hit Manipur to make their decisions with their votes, peacefully.
“Let us decide through the ballot, peacefully, by participating in the elections. We will make the arrangements,” Kumar said at the press conference where the schedule of the General Election 2024 and elections to some State Assemblies were announced
The CEC said that a scheme has been drawn for the displaced people in the violence hit Manipur State that will allow electorates to vote from their respective camps. It has been announced that special polling stations will be set up at/near the camps where the electors, who opt for such facility, will be able to register their votes in Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs).
Around 50,000 people are reportedly living in relief camps across Manipur since violence broke out last year on 3rd May. Normal life remains disrupted as fighting continues between ethnic groups.
The election in the state will be conducted in two phases on 19 April 2024 and on 26 April 2024
Manipur has two Lok Sabha Constituencies – Inner Manipur (General) and Outer Manipur (ST) – that are presently represented by Union Minister Dr Rajkumar Ranjan Singh (BJP) and Lorho S Phoze (NPF) respectively.
There are 20,26,623 electorates of which 10,46,706 are female, 9,79,678 are male and 239 are third gender.
