ECI announces schedule for general elections; Nagaland poll set for 27 Feb

The Election Commission of India has announced the schedule of assembly polls in the three Northeastern states – Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland – on Wednesday afternoon.

Tripura will vote on 16 February 2023 while Meghalaya and Nagaland will vote on 27 February. The counting for all three states will be held on 2 March.

The date of issue of gazette notification for Tripura is on 21 January. The last date for making nominations is 30 January. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on 31 January.

The last date for withdrawal of candidatures is on 2 February.

The date of issue of gazette notification for Meghalaya and Nagaland is on 31 January. The last date for making nominations is 7 February. The scrutiny of nominations will take place on 8 February. The last date for withdrawal of candidatures is on 10 February.

The term of the three assemblies is ending on different dates in March.

While the term of the Nagaland assembly ends on 12 March, the terms of Meghalaya and Tripura assemblies end on 15 March and 22 March respectively.

Tripura has a BJP government. In Nagaland, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and its alliance partner BJP is in power. Meanwhile, National People’s Party (NPP), the only party from the Northeast to have a national party recognition, runs the government in Meghalaya.
