Efforts underway to streamline education through the introduction of the Nagaland Education Administration Service: Advisor Yhome

The Felicitation of Toppers, Rank Holders and Achievers of various Governor’s Awards of HSLC & HSSLC Examinations 2024 by the Governor of Nagaland, La Ganesan was held at Dr. Imkongliba Ao Hall, Raj Bhavan, Kohima on June 12.

62 students were felicitated during the program .

While celebrating the achievements of the students, Ganesan also gave due credits to the teachers, families and friends for their unconditional and unwavering support that they have bestowed throughout your journey.

In his speech, Governor also delved on the government’s active role in education, introducing policies and regulations to improve the education system in India. One such policy is the National Education Policy, 2020 which, according  to the Governor, is founded on the five guiding pillars of access, equity, quality, affordability and accountability. The NEP also aims to provide well trained and most qualified teachers for the students of India. To provide critical thinking and problem solving abilities, along with social and emotional skills. Thus preparing our youths to meet the diverse national and global challenges of the present and future.

Globalization has led to the improvements in the quality of education in India and I am very happy to see the students receiving quality and skill based education. I wish to see you all make a name for yourself not only in the state and national level but also at the international level as well with your ability and hardwork.

Governor also expressed the wish to see the students present to be a good leader of today and tomorrow and be self-sufficient. “Be curious to learn, be flexible when learning, expand, increase and generate new ideas and contribute to the nation building. The youth of today have diverse opportunities in many fields, it is for you to work hard and refine your skills and enter into this competitive world to create a new India,” encouraged the Governnor.

Reminding the students of their privileges in terms of good facilities and infrastructures, quality education by trained and experienced teachers, Ganesan exhorted them to get guidance and think outside the box to boost their creativity and take up new challenges in this extremely challenging world. “Never be afraid of your future but be prepared for unexpected circumstances. My best wishes to the students and my compliments to all the teaching and non teaching faculties who have been tirelessly working in shaping and moulding our students to be leaders of tomorrow,” expressed Ganesan.

Wishing the students success in their future endeavors, the Governor concluded with a quote by  Nelson Mandela which says “Education is the most powerful weapon you can use to change the world.”

Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome Advisor, School Education & SCERT in his speech highlighted that Nagaland also marks the highest drop out rate in the country  and encouraged the students present there to work harder and achieve to greater heights in the future .

Alemyim Isaac Solo NCS, EAC Mokokchung, UPSC CSE 2023 (AIR 749) in an Inspirational talk highlighted that one should find inspiration everywhere. She encouraged the students to keep an open mind, cultivate good habits and surround yourself in good company.

The event was followed by an interaction with the students who mentioned issues with internet connectivity affecting research projects. On response, Dr. Kekhrielhoulie Yhome emphasized seeking improvements through partnerships with BSNL and Jio to extend coverage to remote areas. The Governor also noted that from central government they will do their best to provide comfortable service to the students.

The students also noted that the new NEP includes many extracurricular activities including sports , but cited lack of motivation due to uncertainty about pursuing sports and other activities for livelihood. The Advisor acknowledged Nagas excelling in sports, citing success in the Northeast Games. He  expressed belief in the potential of Naga students, announcing plans for a comprehensive Nagaland Education Sports Policy to provide more opportunities and foster student improvement.

When questioned about policies for rural and remote areas of Nagaland, Advisor Yhome mentioned the presence of over 1700 schools across the state, including in the most rural regions. However, financial constraints limit further efforts. He assured that the government is striving and doing their best to enhance educational administration to ensure all children receive education. The Governor highlighted Nagaland’s education advancements but noted the challenge of pursuing higher studies outside the state. He pledged arrangements for future opportunities for students seeking higher education elsewhere.

Further, students inquired about AI potentially dominating the future, to which the Governor  acknowledged AI’s gradual growth in Western countries and expressed hope for integrating AI education soon.

During the interaction, the students also inquired about their role in Nagaland’s education. To which, the Advisor proposed the Nagaland Education Service, where annual job postings will allow students to contribute to the state. With a substantial workforce, efforts are underway to enhance and streamline education through the introduction of the Nagaland Education Administration Service.

In response to the inquiry about including languages from the eastern region in the curriculum, Yhome explained that all languages are not equally developed. Efforts are underway to create textbooks in all languages, but some may lack sufficient materials for transcription, stated Yhome. The goal is to progress towards inclusivity and balance in language representation, added the Advisor.

During the event, special songs were presented by Students of GHSS, Chümoukedima and Kedovito Peseyie. Kevileno Angami, Commissioner & Secretary, School Education & SCERT pronounced  the vote of thanks. The program was earlier blessed with an invocation by Zakiebeituo Metha, Pastor, Immanuel Baptist Church, Kohima and an introductory address delivered by  Asano Sekhose Chairperson, NBSE.
