In a tragic incident that has sparked fear and concern among villagers, a 72-year-old farmer from New Riphyim village under Wokha district was killed by wild elephants while returning home from his rubber plantation.
The deceased, identified as Rentsamo Odyuo, failed to return home on the evening of August 2. Alarmed by his absence, villagers launched a search operation early on Sunday morning. His lifeless body was later discovered, bearing fatal injuries consistent with an elephant attack, village sources said.
According to villagers, a herd of around 15 wild elephants, including calves, has been residing in the vicinity of the village for an extended period. Their presence has not only disrupted agricultural activities and rubber plantation work but has also instilled fear among the residents, severely affecting their daily lives.

Interacting with mediapersons, villagers voiced deep frustration over repeated incidents of damage caused by the elephants and the lack of effective action from the concerned authorities. They cautioned that if the issue remains unaddressed, they may be compelled to resort to traditional means to protect their lives, property, and livelihoods.
Meanwhile, Tokaho, Wildlife Warden of Dimapur under the Nagaland Wildlife Department, visited New Riphyim Village to assess the ground situation. He also met with the bereaved family and village leaders.
