Old Medical colony in Tuensang town has been a residential area for hundreds of people for more than fifty decades. However, behind the growing rise of residents and population in the colony lies a major concerning issue – environmental degradation due to unchecked dumping of excessive wastes which is supposed to be a running river.
An image captured of a notice board with an issue that orders prohibition of throwing garbage in the area contradicts the scenario which highlights the alarming state of the colony’s surrounding.

What once may have been a clean river with green weeds around has now turned into an informal dumping site. Across the hillside are plastics, wrappers, broken household items, debris of various kinds and many other non-biodegradable wastes.
This not only destroys the natural beauty but poses serious health and environmental risks. Despite the visible evidence, there seem to be a lack of effective wastes management in the area.
The presence of age old plastic pollutants can damage soil quality and the weight of piled wastes can lead to landslides during heavy rain.
