Fazl Ali College (FAC), Mokokchung, held its monthly inter-departmental seminar on April 11 at the college’s conference hall. The seminar, organized by the Seminar Committee of the college, continues to serve as a platform for academic exchange and interdisciplinary dialogue among faculty members, informed a press release from the college.

This month’s presentation was delivered by Dr. Tsukjemchila and Yanthungo from the Department of Geography, on a research paper titled “Exploring Environmental Determinism: A Study on the Ming Dynasty of China and the Sahel Region of Africa.”

In their presentation, Yanthungo gave an introductory talk on climate change through the Little Ice Age (LIA) and Dr. Tsukjemchila delved into the theory of environmental determinism by examining historical case studies from two geographically and culturally distinct regions. The study investigates the role of climate change in shaping the course of the Ming Dynasty in China and the socio-economic dynamics of the Sahel region in Africa.

Highlighting how environmental factors—particularly climate variability—influenced agricultural practices, societal structures, and civilizational resilience, Dr. Tsukjemchila emphasized on the significant impact of ecological conditions on historical developments. She said that by drawing comparisons between these two regions, the study provides valuable insights into how human societies have historically responded to environmental challenges, underlining the broader implications of climate on the trajectory of civilizations.

The seminar concluded with an engaging discussion among faculty members from various departments and presentation of certificates by the Seminar committee to the presenters.
