Father laments unimaginable torment suffered by child; Public protest outside Wokha Police Station

Wokha: Every effort being exerted to conduct thorough investigation and ensure perpetrator is brought to justice: Addl SP

The father of nine-year-old victim, who was rescued in Wokha Town on 20th March 2024, revealed that the alleged abuser had pledged to treat the child as her own and bear the cost for the victim’s education in 2021. The victim’s father lamented that instead, his daughter suffered unimaginable torment.

The victim’s grandmother claimed that the injury marks were not only from recent abuse but also from past incidents. The traumatised child was found with marks of torture all over her body. She said that it was agonizing to see her granddaughter’s harrowing state.

On Thursday, citizens along with various civil society organizations gathered outside Wokha Police Station in solidarity with the child who was physically and mentally tortured by her guardian. The outraged members of the public chanted for justice and demanded that the abuser be held accountable under the full extent of law as per the Indian Penal Code (IPC). They also stressed the importance of taking stringent actions against the accused to deter the recurrence of such heinous crimes in the future.

The citizens expressed stress by the visible signs of abuse on the victim’s body and condemned it as a criminal and heinous act, demanding a fair and expeditious resolution to the case. They urged authorities to ensure that justice is served promptly and unequivocally.

Additional SP Wokha, Soriso K Quinker, issued a statement confirming that on 20 March 2024 at 3:00 pm, the Wokha Police Station received a report of a disturbing incident of child abuse at Tsumang “A”. In response, a swift and coordinated effort was launched by both the Wokha Police Station and the Women Police Station.

The Addl SP informed that one accused individual, identified as Rosemary Kikon, aged 39 and a resident of Tsumang “A” Colony, was promptly apprehended in relation to this case and has been booked under sections 323/324/354/506 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 75 of the Juvenile Justice (JJ) Act.

Further, Soriso informed that the Wokha Women Police Station has received an FIR from the victim’s father, and a case has been duly registered.

The Addl SP assured that every effort is being exerted to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure the perpetrator is brought to justice and also expressed gratitude for the community’s support and cooperation, emphasizing their role in assisting the police to ensure swift and decisive action against incidents of child abuse.

Additionally, he issued an important advisory to the public regarding the maintenance of law and order, underlining the collective responsibility to uphold societal norms and protect the safety and rights of all individuals.
