Female candidate files nomination for Shamator Town Council elections; first to do so in Eastern Nagaland

Shamator: ENPO resolves to abstain from taking part in ULB elections

M Akiuchi became the first woman candidate and the only candidate under Eastern Nagaland to file her nomination today for the Urban Local Bodies election from Shamator Town Council.

Akiuchi filed her nomination to the Returning officer in Shamator for Ward 7 from Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) ticket.

There are 11 wards under Shamator Town Council.

The Eastern Nagaland People’s Organisation (ENPO) had announced that it would also abstain from the Urban Local Body (ULB) elections scheduled on 26th June 2024. It has also maintained that its stance on abstention from participation ULB elections is an exercise of the people’s democratic right to free speech and assembly and that it emphasizes the organisation’s “commitment to democratic processes and the free exercise of individual rights within our collective framework”.

The body has earlier abstained from participating in recently held Lok Sabha polls resulting in not a single vote cast in six districts of Nagaland.

ENPO which has been demanding a separate ‘Frontier Nagaland Territory’ comprising the six eastern Nagaland districts, abstained the election to the lone Nagaland Lok Sabha seat on April 19 in support of its demand, is the apex body of seven tribes from the six eastern districts of Kiphire, Longleng, Mon, Noklak, Shamator, and Tuensang.

Till the filing of this report, there was no information on any other candidate filing for nominations in the Eastern Nagaland region.

Nominations for the Municipal and Town elections in Nagaland closes at 3:00 pm today.
