FGN observes 71st Naga Republic Day; Leaders reaffirm sovereignty and ongoing political process

The Naga National Council (NNC)/ Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN) celebrated its 71st Naga Republic Day celebration on March 22, 2026 at Sanglao village under Khiamniungan region.

Leaders and attendees gathered to commemorate the historic declaration of the Naga Republic and to honour the sacrifices of those who laid down their lives for the Naga cause.

Chief guest of the celebration, Kedahge Brig.Retd.S. Singnya In his addressb reaffirmed the unique identity and historical stand of the Naga people, stating that Nagas are a distinct people with the  right to freedom and sovereignty. He recalled the formation of the Naga National Council (NNC) in 1946 to represent the Naga people and safeguard their birthright in a changing world order. He further highlighted key historical milestones, including the plebiscite held in Kohima on May 16, 1951, and the resolution adopted on April 27, 1955, at Lakhuti village in the Lotha region. These developments, he said, led to the establishment of the Federal Government of Nagaland and the declaration of Naga Republic on March 22, 1956.

Paying tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the Naga cause, Singnya honoured the patriots whose contributions remain central to the nation’s history and identity. The Kedahge also expressed gratitude to various organisations and individuals, including the Forum for Naga Reconciliation (FNR), the Council of Naga Cooperation and Relationship (CNCR), churches, and well-wishers for their continued support, prayers, and efforts towards peace and unity.

He commended national workers for their dedication, sincerity, and courage in serving the nation, and urged citizens to uphold traditional values such as truthfulness, stewardship, faithfulness, and morality passed down by their ancestors. Singnya called upon those who have strayed from the Federation to return and join hands in strengthening unity and upholding the inalienable rights of the Naga people.

Earlier, he unfurled the Naga National Flag and received national salute.

Kedallo NNC/FGN P.Puthai stated that the significance of the Naga Republic, established over 70 years ago, remains a collective responsibility of the Naga people to uphold and protect. He asserted that although agreements have been made multiple times between the Government of India and the Naga National Council (NNC)/Federal Government of Nagaland (FGN), these were allegedly not honoured by the Government of India. Despite this, he noted that political dialogue between the Naga representatives and the Government of India is still ongoing.Puthai emphasized that the NNC/FGN continues to work towards strengthening Naga reconciliation
and expressed confidence that sovereignty would be achieved through a democratic process.

Addressing recent concerns, he clarified that the reported agreement between the Eastern Nagaland Peoples’ Organization (ENPO) and the Government of India would not affect the broader national movement, adding that the ENPO, the state government, and the Government of India are focused on developmental matters only.

During the event, commendation was given to various service personnel by the chief guest , national anthem was performed by Sanglao Students’ Union and parade by the condigents.

Earlier, the program was chaired by T.V Litsaba Lota Kilonser, sanctification prayer by L.K Peshen, head chaplain NNPC, special number by Thangsoi , vote of thanks by S. ASI killo Kilonser NNC//FGN, and benediction by Popoi, Pastor , Sanglao Baptist Church.

As part of the celebration, cultural dance was presented by cultural troups and participation of Republic feast.
