A large area of forest cover in Alichen in Mokokchung district was consumed by fire on Monday evening.

The blaze broke out above Unit Hospital at 2nd Nagaland Armed Police (NAP) camp at Alichen which is about 12 km from Mokokchung Town.

Sources from the fire department stated that upon receiving the information at 4:50 PM in the evening, the fire stations at Mokokchung North and Mokokchung Central deployed a fire engine each with sufficient manpower to the area.

The spread of blaze was later controlled but sources also informed that the cause of the fire was not ascertained till the time of filing this report.

The fire at Alichen was raging around the same time when the massive inferno at Kohima was getting out of hand, barely an hour after Nagaland had voted to elect its leaders for the next 5 years.
