A devastating fire broke out at Nokyu Ward, Mangkolemba, in Mokokchung district, around 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, destroying five private houses, two general shops, and attached godowns. The incident, suspected to have been caused by an electric short circuit, resulted in losses estimated at approximately ₹2.5 crore.
The absence of a fire station in Mangkolemba forced local residents and community members to combat the blaze using buckets, pipes, and other available resources. Despite their concerted efforts, the fire spread rapidly, leaving nothing but ashes. Fortunately, no casualties were reported.
A member of the Mangkolemba Town Council expressed frustration over the repeated appeals for a fire station in the divisional headquarters, which needs to cater to the Japukong, Jangpetkong, and Tsürangkong ranges. “For years, we have been urging the authorities to establish a fire station in Mangkolemba. Unfortunately, no action has been taken, and now we are left helpless, watching everything burn to ashes,” the council member stated.
Residents lamented the lack of emergency services in the region. “If we had proper firefighting infrastructure, this tragedy could have been mitigated.”
