A total of 844 individuals, including children, elderly, sick, people with special needs and infants were successfully rescued and relocated to three designated relief camps after torrential rains, since July 5 evening, led to severe flash floods across low-lying areas in Dimapur Urban and its adjoining rural areas.

There were reports of electrocution from two locations, resulting in three fatalities — two in Kuda village and one in the Police colony.

According to an official statement, major drains overflowed, inundating several colonies including Vihluwe, Netaji, Kuda village, Purana Bazaar B, Walford (Central), Namgalong colony, and Kalibari (Ward 17).

In response to the worsening situation, the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) convened an emergency meeting at noon on July 7. Members resolved to visit the affected areas, extend immediate relief, and prepare a comprehensive report for the government highlighting the flash flood’s impact and proposing long-term solutions.

Preliminary reports indicated that many residential areas were flooded, with houses submerged or damaged. In response, three relief camps were established at BSNL quarters in Walford, SM Colony, and Namgalong.

The District Administration, in coordination with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), launched extensive rescue operations. The SDRF deployed one rescue boat and a team of 25 personnel, including trained divers, to evacuate stranded residents from flooded homes and streets.

Operations began early on July 6 at 5:50 a.m., focusing on the worst-hit zones such as Mount View Colony, Purana Bazaar B, Kuda village, Namgalong colony, Aoyimti village, Police colony, Ekhyoyan village, Walford (Central), Netaji colony, and Phom colony. SDRF team used one rescue boat and 25 personnel including trained divers, to evacuate residents trapped in flooded houses and low-lying streets. A total of 844 people, including children were rescued.

Despite operational challenges due to submerged roads, rescue and relief efforts continued. Authorities confirmed that continuous monitoring is underway, and emergency personnel remain on alert until the situation stabilizes.
