Flood situation in Assam grim, 26 dead across 15 districts

As rainy conditions continue in the Northeast, the flood situation in Assam has gone worse with now 26 people reported dead by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). Several rivers are said to be overflowing causing inundation of 470 villages across the 15 affected districts that include Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Tamulpur, Udalguri, Darrang, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, Karimganj, Goalpara, Nagaon, Chirang, and Kokrajhar.

As per ASDMA, 1,61,209 people have been affected by the flood while 5114 are in 27 relief camps.

The Kopili River in Kampur and Raha Revenue Circles under Nagaon District is also flowing above the danger level, the Authority stated.

According to the India Meteorological Department, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall very likely over Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh till 21st June 2024.

Meanwhile, landslides have been reported in various places across the States in the Northeast. At least 6 people have lost their lives in Sikkim while over 1000 tourists have been evacuated.
