Flower exhibition, sales-cum-workshop on floriculture held in Wokha

A flower exhibition, sales-cum-workshop on floriculture organised by Wosenro Okho was held on November 4 at Tiyi Town Hall, Wokha, drawing flower enthusiasts, entrepreneurs, and horticulture professionals from the district.

The event, organised to promote floriculture and highlight its potential as a source of income and aesthetic enrichment, featured Chumbeni Odyuo, District Soil Conservation Officer (DSCO), Wokha, as the special guest.

The programme began with ’n invocation led by Emilo, Women Leader of WTBC, follwed by Sojano Tsopoe presenting a special number that added a touch of charm to the occasion.

Addressing the gathering at the Flower Exhibition, Sales-cum-Workshop on Floriculture held at Tiyi Town Hall, Wokha, the special guest, Chumbeni Odyuo, District Soil Conservation Officer (DSCO), underscored the immense potential of floriculture as a sustainable avenue for economic empowerment, particularly for women and rural communities.

She encouraged participants to view floriculture not merely as a hobby or decorative pursuit, but as a profitable and environmentally friendly venture capable of contributing to both individual income and the local economy.

Commending the organisers, Wosenro Okho, for initiating the event, she expressed optimism that such programmes would inspire local growers to explore the commercial aspects of flower production and help promote floriculture as a viable industry in the district.

Delivering the greetings, Thungbeni Ngullie, President of the Eloe Hoho, lauded Wosenro Okho for organising the event and for their continued efforts in promoting such initiatives in the past. She also commended the participants for their enthusiasm and acknowledged Anuranjan for his consistent support towards community development, particularly in youth skill-building initiatives.

Dr. Mhalo Lungalung, in her talk on “The Significance of Flower Shows,” highlighted that Wokha district is home to many passionate flower lovers. She explained that the exhibition serves as a platform to showcase the dedication of local flower growers and the variety of flowers cultivated in the region. She further noted that many are unaware of how to commercialise their produce, find suitable markets, or identify profitable platforms, which is why the workshop was being conducted. She encouraged participants to share their knowledge and experiences and to take part in the on-the-spot flower competition scheduled for the following day.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks, followed by an evaluation of the flower exhibition and light refreshments.

Later in the afternoon, a workshop on “Importance, Scope and Cultivation Practices of Commercial Flowers in Nagaland” was held at the same venue. The session was moderated by Erenpeni Kikon, and the resource persons included Ruth Humtsoe, Horticulture Inspector, Wokha; Dr. Mhalo Lungalung, CTO, KVK Wokha; and Anuranjan, Skill Officer, Wokha.

The speakers highlighted the vast opportunities in commercial floriculture, shared scientific insights on cultivation practices, and encouraged participants to adopt sustainable and modern techniques for flower production.
