The Chief Minister Dr. Neiphiu Rio-led ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in Nagaland on Friday asserted that English is the officially declared language of Nagaland, and it is rooted in the Naga history where the English language played a pivotal role for over a century, particularly in the domains of education, governance, and religion.

The NDPP’s affirmation comes in the backdrop of a statement made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who, on Thursday reportedly stated that those who speak English in the country would soon feel ashamed.

The NDPP, who rose to power in the state with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as its main ally, issued a statement saying that it (NDPP) is a political organization that seeks to represent the aspirations of all sections of society and serve as the voice of the people.

Without taking names, the NDPP stated that in recent times, there has been considerable discussion and debate surrounding the issue of language, particularly with regard to the English language.

“In the context of Nagaland, English is the officially declared language of the State. This

designation is not recent—it is rooted in our history, where English has played a pivotal role for over a century, particularly in the domains of education, governance, and religion. At the same time, we strongly uphold the importance of preserving and promoting our indigenous languages, which are integral to our identity, culture, and heritage. These languages must be safeguarded and passed on to the future generations. However, it is equally important to recognise that other languages, particularly English, serve as vital bridges—linking us beyond our borders to the rest of India and to the wider global community,” the NDPP asserted.

Pointing out that language is not merely a tool for communication but a powerful medium for the exchange of knowledge, culture, and ideas, the party indirectly reminded that India is a proud democratic nation, built upon the foundational values of diversity, inclusiveness, and tolerance.

“Our federal structure acknowledges and respects the plurality of identities and cultures, including the unique voices of minorities. This inclusivity is a strength that contributes to the greatness of our nation. Nagaland, as a unique and vibrant state, is home to numerous tribes, sub-tribes, dialects, and cultures. Our youth are dynamic, enterprising, and globally engaged. One of the key enablers of their success—within India and across the world—has been their

fluency in multiple languages, particularly English. This linguistic competency has opened doors to employment, education, and professional advancement, while also fostering self-confidence and the ability to engage meaningfully with the wider world,” the party stated.

Reaffirming its belief that respect for all cultures and languages must be a cornerstone of the national ethos, the NDPP underscored the need to create inclusive spaces and equal

opportunities for every citizen to participate in the nation-building process.

“As a political party, we will continue to champion the principles of unity in diversity, and

promote national integration through mutual respect and understanding. The NDPP remains committed to these ideals and will continue to work towards a society that values every voice and empowers every individual,” the statement added.
