A total of six bakery manufacturing units were scrutinized during the inspection, revealing significant discrepancies in labelling practices. Only Popular Bakery received commendation for adhering to labelling guidelines, while the remaining five establishments fell short of the desired standards. It was also noted that many of these bakery products find their way into neighbouring districts such as Wokha, Zunheboto, Tuensang, Mon, as well as Kohima and Dimapur.

Merenlemba Ao and Sukumlo Yanthan emphasized the importance of labelling key information on bakery products for the benefit of the public and consumers. The duo stressed that labelling should prominently include the manufacturing date, best-before date, and information about the product’s vegetarian or non-vegetarian status. They also underscored that this information should extend to new packaging as well, urging bakery owners not to overlook these crucial details.

During the inspection, both officers raised awareness about the necessity of such checks, highlighting the potential health risks associated with improperly labeled or contaminated food products. They cautioned bakery owners to prioritize cleanliness in food preparation and handling.

Merenlemba Ao further disclosed that the majority of bakery units failed to comply with government directives regarding proper labelling and manufacturing standards. In response, all bakery owners have been summoned to the Food Safety Office, Mokokchung on September 5, 2023. During this meeting, they will receive education on the importance of adherence to food safety regulations and warnings.

The officials stated that if they are caught after such warnings, action will be taken against them in accordance with the Food Safety Office (FSO) Act. The officials also emphasized that health issues often stem from poor food consumption choices, underscoring the need for consumers to be vigilant in checking the products they purchase.
