The 15th edition of the Lotha Football Championship was officially set in motion on Wednesday at the Public Ground, Wokha, drawing football enthusiasts from across the district and marking the return of competitive football action in a spirited atmosphere.
The opening ceremony was graced by Chumlamo Humtsoe, ADC Satakha and Co-Owner of Doyang Strikers FC, as the Inaugural Guest, while Wokha Town Council Chairperson, W Myingthungo Kikon attended as the Special Invitee. The tournament flag was ceremonially hoisted following the arrival and line-up of participating teams.
Speaking at the event, Humtsoe underlined the importance of sports in shaping discipline, unity and character among young people. He noted that initiatives such as the Nagaland Super League have significantly elevated football in the state by creating wider exposure and opportunities for local players. Emphasizing dedication, teamwork and discipline, he urged players to uphold sportsmanship and encouraged the community to actively support emerging football talents.
Special Invitee, W Myingthungo Kikon, in his address, highlighted football’s role in nurturing values such as perseverance, focus and adaptability, both on and off the field. Appreciating the efforts of the Wokha District Football Association (WDFA), he acknowledged the challenges involved in organising a tournament of this scale and expressed hope that the championship would continue to strengthen sporting culture and community bonding in the district.
The programme was chaired by Tournament Secretary Amos Odyuo, while the championship blessing was pronounced by Zubenthung Ngullie, Pastor, PBC Wokha. WDFA President N. Samuel Ezung, in his presidential address, outlined the objectives of the tournament and reaffirmed the association’s commitment to grassroots football development.
The Fair Play Pledge was administered by Athungo Erui, Member, Technical Committee, calling upon teams and officials to uphold integrity and fairness throughout the tournament. An interlude by Emily Murry added vibrancy to the ceremony.

With the official declaration of the championship, the focus swiftly shifted to the pitch as opening-day matches delivered excitement and goals.
Opening Day Results
Yon Sporting Club made a strong statement with a dominant win over Emirates FC. M Yongsen struck early in the 5th minute, followed by goals from Sentisang (24’, 41’) and Sachamo Yanthan (35’). Although Emirates FC found the net through Phyobemo Kithan in the 38th minute, Yon Sporting Club sealed the contest in stoppage time with a goal from Mhachio (70+1).
In the second fixture, Nyiro Range FC edged past Airfield Colony FC in a closely contested match. Jangganglung opened the scoring in the 25th minute before Vizo levelled two minutes later. Mhao’s decisive strike in the 43rd minute ensured Nyiro Range FC secured all three points.
