St. Xavier College Jalukie recently launched an initiative of e-rickshaw to empower women. The initiative was inaugurated by Nagaland Governor La. Ganesan on 22 March 2023 on the sideline of ‘Yuva Utsav’, which he graced. Speaking at the occasion, Ganesan hoped that the initiative will instil greater sense of dignity of labour and social responsibility in girls.
The e-rickshaw will be managed by the girl students and supervised by the women cell of the college.
Dr. Fr. Francis Cheerangal, principal, St. Xavier college Jalukie informed Nagaland Tribune that he came up with the idea of E-Rickshaw and shared his thoughts to his staffs and students as a workable possibility. He tried raising funds through different modes to purchase one and finally the request to governor got a positive results, he said.
On been asked why the e-rickshaw and not any other rickshaw, the principal replied that an e-rickshaw was preferred for its zero emission, low maintenance and ease to drive. It is a pilot project in hope that others may bring it to the market in the course of time, it can do so much especially with regards to environmental pollution, he added.

Dr. Fr. Cheerangal also mention that the introduction of e-rickshaw will be affective in motivating participation of girl students and help in earning for the women cell. The initiative will help develop dignity of labour and social responsibility among girls, he said.
Asked if any such initiative is being taken for the boys, the principal replied positively informing that St. Xavier College is considering the facilitation of audio recording by installing a studio. Also, a synthetic track for runners is in planning to promote great talents available in the region.
The launch of the e-rickshaw was seen from the perspective of women empowerment and this initiative gives special attention for the girl students and the women cell.
The principal informed that the vehicle runs on its four-piece battery that is electrically charged. A fully charged battery can run up to 8 hours.
The vehicle is expected to be put into use by the first week of April and will be driven by the girl students.
