Governor extends greeting on 72nd Phom Day

Kohima: Phom Day marks end of headhunting practice and attacking of rival villages

Nagaland Governor La Ganesan has extended greetings on the occasion of the 72nd Phom Day.

6th June marks a significant day for the Phom community as it observes the Peace Making Day signed on 6th June 1952 whereby, under the leadership of Lt. Hamnyei and Lt. Yongtau and other intellectuals from different villages, the community pledged to stop the practice of headhunting and attacking rival villages.

Governor Ganesan in his message stated that Phom Day is a “day of unity, reflection, and cultural pride, honoring the commitment to peace and the transformation of societal values.” He also added that the day serves as a reminder of the importance of harmony and the enduring spirit of the Phom community.

Temjen Imna Along, Minister of Tourism and Higher Education, also conveyed his greetings on X stating, “May ‘Phom Day’ inspire us to be channels of blessings and pave the way for a brighter future. Wishing the Phom community a joyous day filled with love and unity.”

On the momentous day, Advisor of Tribal Affairs and Election, H Tovihoto Ayemi sent greetings to the Phom Community and stated, “As the Phom Community honor the legacy & peaceful existence envisioned by their forefathers, let us all continue to uphold the spirit of oneness & carry the message of peace to every corner of our State & beyond. May this Phom Day inspire us all to nurture a harmonious society.”
